Remembering God in America Again!

This week America will be celebrating her 232nd anniversary since she declared her independence from the rule of British tyranny. Sadly, to most of her citizens “it’s just another day off” or for others “the focal point of their summer vacation.” And while we live in a world where revolutions and coups (almost weekly) topple governments and overthrow kingdoms, America has experienced blessings and stability. One may ask the question, “What is it that America has possessed throughout her history that has allowed her to achieve such peace and prosperity?”
One has but to look at the foundation that America was built upon to understand the secret to her success. John Adams, 2nd president of the United States proclaimed, “The general principles on which the Fathers achieved independence were the general principles of Christianity.” So enamored was he by the Divine intervention of Providence in the birthing of this nation, that he believed that the 4th of July should become a religious holiday- a day when we remembered God’s hand of deliverance and a day of religious activities when we committed ourselves afresh to the Lord in “solemn acts of devotion to God Almighty.”
Our 6th president, John Quincy Adams, while delivering a 4th of July speech in Newburyport, Massachusetts in 1837 told the masses: “Why is it that, next to the birthday of the Savior of the world your most joyous and most venerated festival returns on this day?” He went on to answer the question that he had posed to the people that had gathered with him, “Is it not that, in the chain of human events, the birthday of the nation is indissolubly linked with the birthday of the Savior? That it forms a leading event in the progress of the Gospel dispensation? Is it not that the Declaration of Independence first organized the social compact on the foundation of the Redeemer’s mission upon the earth? That it laid the cornerstone of human government upon the first precepts of Christianity?”
America was most assuredly founded as a Christian nation, establishing our laws and morals based distinctly upon Judeo-Christian ethics. For anyone to say otherwise, they are either operating in ignorance to the historical proofs that are still in existence to this day, or else they are individuals seeking to intentionally deny TRUTH (This does not mean that other people of other religions are not welcomed in America, but it does mean that we, as individuals and as a nation, are not to compromise our values or our belief system just because they are here).
There were 2 great mottos that resounded throughout the 13 colonies during their struggles during the Revolution: “No king, but King Jesus!” And the other (first mentioned by Benjamin Franklin) was “Rebellion to tyrants is obedience to God.” Hardly are these the words that describe a nation who wanted nothing to do with God. Yet, this is how modern historians are attempting to repaint the canvas of history with their anti-Christian, atheistic mindsets. Our society has been “dumbed down” by those who want to eradicate God, the Bible, and Christianity from our heritage. While humanistic values (i.e. – there is no real right or wrong, if you feel it’s wrong then is must be wrong to you, if you feel it’s right then it must be right to you) are now being promoted in our institutions of public education as the “new morality of America.” Nothing could be further from the truth. For if this mindset was valid, what would hinder those in society from committing rape, or murder, and a myriad of other abuses?
Nor can it be that just because our government passes a law that such a decision makes a matter right or wrong either. If that were true, slaver would still exist in America today because in the Dred Scott Decision of 1857, 7 of the 9 Supreme Court Justices ruled in favor of the constitutionality of slavery.
Contrary to what many would have you to believe, there is still a right and a wrong in this world today. And what did our Founding Fathers base that standard upon? They based it upon the Judeo-Christian ethics of the Bible. It’s the reason that “THOU SHALT NOT STEAL” and “LOVE THY NEIGHBOR AS THYSELF” (as well as many other of laws that govern our society) served the peace and prosperity of our nation then, just as they serve the peace and prosperity of our nation today.
In recent years we wrongly allowed the very principles that produced morality and virtue to be restricted and in some cases, even eradicated from public life. We need to once again recognize the truth that was so well understood by the Father of our nation (President George Washington) when he stated: “The propitious smiles of heaven can never be expected on a nation that disregards the eternal rules of order and right which heaven itself has ordained.” Abraham Lincoln reiterated the very same sentiment decades later when he proclaimed: “The truth announced in the Holy Scripture, and proven by all history is that, “Those nations only are blessed whose God is the Lord.”
As a nation, as long as we honored and obeyed God’s principles, we reaped God’s blessings and protection in this land. And as we celebrate our nation’s rich history this week, may all of us REMEMBER GOD IIN AMERICA AGAIN!
